Pohang, South Korea, 14 June 2026 It is an overcast Sunday, and I'm heading towards Songdo Beach through streets I haven't previously taken. As always, I feel very much drawn to ordinary things. This has been one constant of my life.

Pohang, South Korea, 13 June 2026 A photograph is always a moment in time, or, differently put, the next moment is not the same, cannot be the same, 'cause it has changed. Which brings to mind a thought I recently came across in Robert Galbraith's The Silkworm. We all are here by accident, really. Had conception happened just a moment later, we wouldn't be here.

Montañita, Ecuador, 10 Dezember 2012  V irginia took this picture. We are not a couple very more.   It is amazing what a picture can trigger. There are so many things that go through my head when looking at it that there is no way to capture and get hold of them. It is beyond my comprehension how our brain is able to simplify and make sense of what seems to me totally incomprehensible. I doubt that it is me, my consciousness, that does the selection of what is remembered.   It seems to me that a mechanism is at play that only the very vain ones think they understand.

Busan, am 8. Juni 2026 Manchmal findet man etwas, von dem man gar nicht wusste, dass man es suchte. Doch vielleicht ist das ja Wunschdenken. Jedenfalls: Ich erlebte mich an diesem Montag recht lustlos und unmotiviert, fragte mich wieder einmal, wieso man tut, was man tut, und vom meisten gar nichts richtig mitkriegt. Trotzdem bewegte ich mich dann aus dem Hotel, fragte mich durch zum Hafen, stiess in der Folge auf die Parkanlage hinter dem Bahnhof  – und war begeistert, da man dort viel Weite und das Meer erleben kann. Und besser als diese Kombination geht es bei mir nicht.

Pohang, South Korea, 11 June 2026 Photography is essentially about framing: What to put inside tje frame, and what to leave out. Equally important are light and background. The sun was shining on this rose when I passed by, and so I tried my best to capture it. Also, I was very conscious of how to place it against the background.

  With Telmo in Busan, 9 June 2026 Telmo, a neurosurgeon from Santa Cruz do Sul, is learning a new technique at one of Busan's hospitals. That we should meet here  – he takes English classes with me in Santa Cruz  – is a wonderful coincidence. The guy who's responsible for Telmo's well-being during his stay drives us to various pretty marvellous sights in East Busan. It is a most enjoyable trip!

Murg, 6. Mai 2021 Fotos sind für mich Erinnerungsstützen. Meistens weiss ich genau,  wo ich sie aufgenommen habe, wann das gewesen ist, jedoch eher selten.  Das weiss mein Kamera-Bilderspeicher. .

Pohang, South Korea, 12 June 2026 Ever since a young Japanese woman, whom I met in a Cafe in  Incheon, let me know that South Koreans are masters in design, I'm going through the streets with an increased sense of alertness.

Im November 2025 verbringe ich einige Tage in Triest, von wo aus ich auch Muggia und Sistiana besuche, zwei Orte, die nicht weit von der Stadt liegen. Die Fahrt nach Muggia sollte angeblich 20 Minuten dauern, es waren dann vierzig (mit dem Bus), die Fahrt nach Sistiana dauerte genau die angegebenen zwanzig Minuten (mit dem Zug). Von Sistiana geblieben ist mir der steinige Strand sowie eine Unterhaltung mit dem Betreiber des Bahnhofrestaurants, der mir sein Leid klagte. Er komme sich vor wie ein Gefangener, seit er vor drei  Monaten das Restaurant übernommen habe. Er sehne sich nach seinem Leben als Fischer zurück, das  er siebzehn Jahre lang geführt habe. Das Bild habe ich nahe beim Strand aufgenommen.

Busan, South Korea, 9 June 2026 I've seen these flowers in Switzerland, in France, in Germany. I've seen them very, very often. And, they still intrigue me.

Busan, South Korea, 9 June 2026 Busan's Chinatown lies across the main entrance of the station. You do not have to be told that you're in Chinatown, you immediately sense it. A Chinese wedding in Ho-Chi-Minh City comes to mind where everyone wanted  to emigrate to America. And, where to in America? Chinatown!

Pohang, South Korea, 11 June 2026 This is one of the flowers that I've discovered in South Korea. And, like all discoveries that enchant me, I could not get enough of it. Also, all of a sudden I saw them everywhere.

Busan, South Korea, 9 June 2026 I felt completely awe-struck when I first laid eyes on these two towers. It was a sensation that did not leave me. Again and again I returned to watch and photograph them from different angles.

Busan, North Port, 8 June 2026 It was overcast on this day, and my mood was likewise. I strolled around, pretty listless, when a WhatsApp message from Telmo, one of my students in Santa Cruz do Sul doing some training at one of the hospitals here, asked whether I would have time for lunch. And, so we had a pleasent conversation over lunch. On my way back to the hotel it began to drizzle, yet after a brief stay in my room I ventured out again, learned from the receptionist that the port was in walking distance and felt excited when I got there: space, the sea, and stunning architecture  – precisely my idea of paradise. Well, one of them ...

Incheon, am 6. Juni 2026 Aufgenommen habe ich diese Blumen nahe beim Bahnhof Unseo. Beim Betrachten geht mir der junge Mann aus Laos durch den Kopf, der mit mir in der Bahnhofb ä ckerei das Gespräch suchte. U nd wie ich  ganz automatisch bei der Erw ähnung von Vientiane an Jim Michener dachte, der dort während einiger Jahre gelebt hatte und, wie ich auf Facebook las, vor zwei Jahren dort verstorben ist. Und kaum habe ich das notiert, tauchen noch viel mehr Bilder von ihm auf, aus Bangkok, wo wir einst im selben Hotel lebten.

Dass ich diese drei Bilder am 5. Juli 2025 in Bad Ragaz  aufgenommen habe, weiss ich nur, weil meine Handy-Kamera  es so registriert hat. Ich selber vermeine, diese Fotos zum ersten Mal zu sehen. Sie gefallen mir, es sind die Art von Aufnahmen, die ich oft mache und von denen ich, wie es scheint, nicht genug kriegen kann.

Seoul, 5 June 2026 When I first walked by, my eyes were on the flowers. When, after having lunch at a smal roadside cafe, I returned, my attention was on how to frame the photo.

Seoul, 5 June 2026 Near Seoul Station, I spotted a side street that, when walking along, transported me to another time, or, more to the point, a feeling of timelessness. Shortly before becoming aware of these flowers I saw what must have been an art class engaged in attentive drawing. No sound was to be heard, only eternity seemed to be present. A rare experience!

Brasília, am 8. März 2026 Brasília, da wollte ich schon so lange hin (von kaum einer Stadt hatte ich derart viele Bilder architektonischer Perlen gesehen), und schliesslich war es dann soweit. Die Bilder, die mir jetzt im Nachhinein durch den Kopf gehen, sind mannigfaltig. doch am allermeisten kommt mir die Esplanada dos Mistérios in den Sinn, die ich in beide Richtungen abmarschiert hette (und an der die erste der Aufnahmen gemacht wurde)

Nara, Japan, 1 October 2025 The hotel near the train station where I was staying had no adapter, so off I went to find one. A young and very friendly lady in the shop that the recepionist had recommended informed me that they only had adapers for Japanese going abroad but not the other way 'round. She offered to phone around and then let me know that there was a shop but very far, and definitely too far to walk. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a try. It was indeed a long walk yet I got to see a suburban Japan I so far had not encountered  – it looked very much like suburbia anywhere. What I enjoyed  were the flowers on the way.

Tottori, Japan, 9 October 2025 Sometimes I only detect what I have photographed when looking at what I have photographed. When taking the picture of this big spider I did not (consciously, that is) notice the small one above it. Only in hindsight, I made this discovery.

Zürich, am 19, Mai 2026 Wohl keine Zugstrecke bin ich öfter gefahren als von Sargans nach Zürich. Umso überraschter war ich, als mir erst kürzlich bei der Einfahrt in den HB, eine Brücke sowie eine Wendeltreppe auffielen, die ich bewusst so noch gar nie wahrgenommen hatte. Die eigene Wahrnehmung, so scheint mir, bildet nie die Realität ab,  sie ist nichts anderes als "meine" Art und Weise, die Welt zu sehen. Eine leichte Drehung des Kopfes  – und schon sieht alles ganz anders aus. Was ich mich heute nicht mehr frage: Warum ich den Kopf gedreht habe. Stattdessen:  Ich habe gerade wieder einmal erfahren, dass man den Kopf auch bewusst drehen kann.

The moment I'm taking a photograph, I'm very present. Since I'm taking so many, I often forget the ones, I have been very fond of when taking them. This was the case with this pic that I took near the parking lot and the bus stop respectively at the Tottori sand dunes. Looking at it  brings me back to my then exploring the area. And to the excitement I felt when taking this pic.  

Santa Cruz do Sul, 11. Februar 2026 Ein Bild, das keiner Kommentierung bedarf; die Schönheit und Ästhetik der Natur dürfen erlebt werden, sie sind eine Einladung, die man meines Erachtens nicht ausschlagen sollte. Sich Zeit zum Schauen  nehmen, sich dem Hingeben, was ist. Das müsste doch eigentlich reichen ...

Sargans, am 13. Mai 2023 Das rote Muster fasziniert mich an dieser Blume, und dass der Hintergrund stimmig ist, ich für einmal selber ganz angetan bin von diesem Einrahmen.

Sargans, am 25.  Mai 2026 Es kommt vor, dass ich genz genau weiss, wieso ich ein Foto aufgenommen habe. im vorliegenden Fall motivierten mich die noch nicht blühenden Blüten sowie ihre Anordnung. Aufgenommen habe ich das Bild am Bahnweg in Sargans.

Montbéliard, 12 Juillet 2025 La mémoire n'est pas seulement créative, elle est aussi sélective. Je n'ai aucun souvenir de la photo du cinéma, mais je me souviens très bien des images de la façade du bâtiment. Non, je ne me demande pas pourquoi, je l'accepte simplement.

Zürich, am 24. Mai 2026 Seit Jahren verbringe ich Sonntage zu Hause. Zwar gab es immer mal wieder Ausnahmen, doch sie waren rar.  An diesem Pfingstsonntag hingegen fuhr ich mit dem  Zug nach Zürich. Ich hatte vor, vom Hegibachplatz, wo meine Grossmutter gewohnt hatte,   zum Steinwiesplatz zu laufen, wo ich als Bub beim Berner Wähen einkaufen durfte  – einer der Höhepunkte meiner Zürich-Ferien. Den Berner gibt es nicht mehr, die Tramhaltestelle Steinwiesplatz auch nicht mehr, und die Strecke war viel kürzer als ich sie in Erinnerung hatte. Am Nachmittag las ich online, dass es sich enpfehle Zugbillette in Korea im Voeraus zu buchen, was ich dann auch unverzüglich tat  –  und mich erst im nachhinein fragte, ob der Anbieter eigentlich  seriös war und ich womöglich für die Strecke Seoul-Busan zuviel bezahlt hatte. Ich hatte. ärgerte mich  ausgiebig  –   und ermahnte mich dann: Lern was draus, du Depp!

Hiroshima, 12. Oktober 2025 Ich wüsste nicht zu sagen, was mich bewogen hat, Hiroshima zu besuchen, doch ich glaube mich zu erinnern, dass Takako mir Nara und Himeji empfohlen hatte, und vermutlich auch Hiroshima. Ich habe keine Ahnung, ob ich mir etwas Bestimmtes erwartete, doch ich war überrascht, eine derart moderne Stadt vorzufinden (mich überraschte auch, dass mich das überrascht hat, ist es doch so recht eigentlich mehr als logisch), speziell der Hafen hat mich  beeindruckt. Gewundert habe ich mich auch, dass ein Hotelgast zum  Frühstück im Hotel-Pijama erschien. PS: Was man übrigens auf der ersten Aufnahme sieht, i st ein Fenster, in dem sich die gegenüberliegende Strassenseite spiegelt.
