By the side of the road

Sargans, Switzerland, 30 November 2024

On a chilly November morning, I went for a short 
walk near my apartment –  I wanted to take some photos.
As (almost) always, I had no clear idea what I was looking for 
but I do hold a deep conviction that wherever you are there will
be something to see and to notice (even in your neighbourhood).

However, I wasn't prepared for what my eyes discovered by the
side of the road. I haven't the foggiest idea what made me take the 
above picture –  yet I do like what something inside me made 
my conscious self record it.

Domodossola, am 17. April 2024 Zwei Nächte verbrachte ich in Domodossola. Es war nicht mein erster Besuch, die Stadt ist übersichtlich  und nicht sehr gross. Erstaunlicherweise gelang es mir jedoch, mich zu verlaufen. Es war sonnig und windig, was das Fotografieren von Blumen  nicht gerade einfach machte. Jedenfalls brauchte ich einige   Anläufe und viel Geduld, bis die obige Aufnahme zustande kam. Woran ich mich im Rückblick erinnere: Dass die Bewohner "meiner"  Unterkunft, jedenfalls die, deren Zimmer an meines grenzte, offenbar taub waren   –  ich wähnte mich gelegentlich in einer Disco. Dazu kam, dass sie die Türen  schletzten  – was auf taube Eltern schliessen lässt.  Erfreulich war hingegen die Kassiererin im Supermarkt, deren Maschine  den Barcode nicht lesen konnte, worauf sie mich nicht etwa aufforderte,   mir ein Ersatzprodukt zu besorgen, sondern dies gleich selber tat.  Auch  erfreulich war die junge m Rez...

These pics were taken in the beginning of May 2022, on different days. I was standing quite some time on the narrow street below and did not tire at all of trying to capture what only lasted for very, very brief moments. Or better: what we call moments.

Self-portrait, Lausanne 1989

Lausanne,  1989 I'm presently cleaning house (step by step, so it will take a while).  Among the things that I've come across was this photo of me that I took  or,  rather, that the camera that I had placed on a pile of books in front of me  (I remember this distinctly) had taken of me.  At that time, in 1989, I shared an apartment with my brother Thomas at Chemin des Fleurettes in Lausanne and it was there that the photo was taken.   I was alone in the apartment. Scrutinising the picture 35 years later, I'm wondering  whether such a photo could be taken by a person behind the lens. Would I look to the  camera in the same way  knowing that I'm being photographed? I doubt it.
